A Letter from Chris and Gerrie Bayley
After another year of fund raising, begging, borrowing etc, On June 11th my ‘team’ and I went to Manchester Airport to pick up a group of 34 Chernobyl Children. This is the North Wales Coast Links 9th year and the largest group we have brought to date. You have always been so supportive of what we are trying to do to help the children of Belarus, so I thought you might like to see some photo’s of the children that you helped us to bring this time. The children were from 5 different villages and some had very sad stories to tell. Several had lost a parent and 3 had lost both parents. All the children suffered from very weak immune systems and other problems due to exposure to low level radiation. The children were from 5 different villages and some had very sad stories to tell. We hired a coach for the month, and took the children on trips at least 5 days a week, and they had ‘a ball’. Most had never seen the sea before, climbed a mountain or seen a waterfall. It was a month of ‘firsts’ for all of them, doing things they may well never get the chance to do again.
The children also had the opportunity to perform, in front of 500 people at Rhyl Pavilion Theatre, along with a male voice choir, a harpist and various other artists. The evening raised over £4000 which in’ our language’ that is funds for 8 children! So we have had a month off and are now starting the ball rolling again for another group coming next year. From all of us in the North Wales Coast Link of Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline, thank you for your interest, generosity and continued support and we look forward to coming to give you an update very soon.
